For many people, cow’s milk can trigger allergic responses like earache, runny noses or congestion, skin rash, irritability and asthma because it is high in fat and the protein casein. However, cow’s milk also contains necessary nutrients such as calcium, potassium and magnesium.
In addition to being difficult to digest, the traditional practice of raising cows has become a heated issue in the past decade. The overuse of hormones, antibiotics and the inhumane treatment of the animals have lead many to criticize the dairy farming industry.
What can be done to maintain the nutritional value cow’s milk without the side effects to your health and the animals? Try going organic. Buying organic milk has become easier recently since many commercial grocers have begun carrying it. However, some dairies label their product organic when in fact it is a mixture of milk purchased from many different ranches and may contain “commercial” milk. I suggest calling the manufacturer listed on the back and find out if you are actually getting what you pay for.
I recommend Organic Valley products. They are a small, family-owned ranch with their hands completely on their product and consistently have a super high quality product.
If you cannot tolerate dairy products you will need to supplement your diet with a clinical quality mineral product. Xymogen makes a comprehensive multi-mineral product, or Ossopan MD, which contains calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. Ask your Advanced Wellness Center doctor which one is best for you.
